CTC is an evidence-based, community-level prevention system that uses data to help communities understand how to best prevent violence. Saba Masho and Terri Sullivan Effective youth violence prevention programs are available but underutilized, and more needs to be learned about approaches that change community-level risks for violence. CTC PLUS will be evaluated in three Richmond, Virginia neighborhoods for associated changes in rates of youth homicide and injury, neighborhood factors that affect the likelihood of violence, and community capacity to implement effective strategies. This program is designed to reduce risk for future sexual violence perpetration among middle school boys aged years. The impact of the program on a number of outcomes will be examined, including sexual assault perpetration, bystander behavior, attitudes related to gender roles and acceptability of sexual violence, interpersonal relationships, and youth-adult connectedness. Factors that may impact the implementation of the program will also be assessed, and results will be used to inform future Rape Prevention Education Program activities. A youth-led violence prevention initiative will be implemented and evaluated via a quasi-experimental design in middle and high schools within Rapid City, SD. Examined program effects will include sexual violence perpetration, bystander actions, and other behaviors, such as bullying and suicidality.

By Aaron Smith and Monica Anderson Digital technology and smartphones in particular have transformed many aspects of our society, including how people seek out and establish romantic relationships. Here are five facts about online dating: When we first studied online dating habits in , most Americans had little exposure to online dating or to the people who used it, and they tended to view it as a subpar way of meeting people.
Today, nearly half of the public knows someone who uses online dating or who has met a spouse or partner via online dating — and attitudes toward online dating have grown progressively more positive. Online dating use among to year-olds has also risen substantially since the last Pew Research Center survey on the topic. One factor behind the substantial growth among younger adults is their use of mobile dating apps. But it still means that one-third of online daters have not yet met up in real life with someone they initially found on an online dating site.
Many online daters enlist their friends in an effort to put their best digital foot forward. Despite the wealth of digital tools that allow people to search for potential partners, and even as one-in-ten Americans are now using one of the many online dating platforms, the vast majority of relationships still begin offline.

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going. If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart.

Search Share A study of online dating finds that the early stages of courting are all about “deal breakers. Are you carefully weighing every factor that makes someone a good romantic match? Not long ago, dating produced no data at all. People met their romantic partners through the recommendations of friends, family, or even at real-world locations known as “bars. Those 30 million people have generated billions of pieces of data. And because most dating sites ask users to give consent for their data to be used for research purposes, this online courting has played out like an enormous social science experiment, recording people’s moment-by-moment interactions and judgments.
A team led by Elizabeth Bruch, a sociologist at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, tapped into this torrent of dating data. Because of a nondisclosure agreement, the researchers can’t reveal the exact source of their subjects, describing it only as an “established, marriage-oriented, subscription-based dating site” from which they randomly selected people, all based in New York City. Besides photographs, each user’s profile could include any number of personal details including age, height, weight, education, marital status, number of children, and smoking and drinking habits.
The data set includes some 1. But beyond someone’s looks, how much do any of these factors matter for mate selection? One complication is that online daters are not making just one decision, but several in a series:
